Dr Anthony S Kravitz OBE (UK)

CDA President

Dr Anthony S Kravitz

Anthony Kravitz qualified at Manchester Dental School in 1966, just after reaching the age of 21 years. Following six months as a House Surgeon he went into general dental practice in Greater Manchester, until he moved to London in 2005.

He became involved in local dental politics in 1969, and then in UK national dental politics in 1981. He was a member of the Council/Executive Board of the British Dental Association (BDA) from 1985 until 2003. At various times, he was a member or chairman of many BDA committees. From 1997 until 2003 he was the chief negotiator for the UK’s 24,000 NHS general practitioners, as Chairman of the General Dental Services Committee (GDSC). He was President of the BDA, for a period of 12 months, from May 2004.

Dr Kravitz has been involved in international affairs for the BDA since 1990 and has been looking after CDA matters for the association during this period. He was also a member of the European Union Dental Liaison Committee for over 10 years, (uniquely) chairing two working parties – on Ethics and Quality Assurance, and Dental Auxiliaries. He is the principal author of the EU Manual of Dental Practice, last published in 2014. Dr Kravitz is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Cardiff University, Wales.

He is also a chairman of the Fitness to Practise Panel of the (UK) General Dental Council.

Anthony has been married for over 44 years (to Hilary) and they have three children and 10 grandchildren.

He was appointed an OBE by HM The Queen in the 2003 New Year Honours List.

Dr William O'Reilly (Australia)

Conjoint Associate Professor Bill O’Reilly is a general dental practitioner and has been admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Bill has had extensive experience in the non-dental corporate arena.

Bill was a Director of Manchester Unity Australia and its independent elected Chairman for four years. Manchester Unity, at the time of his retirement, was the 10th largest health fund in Australia, had a suite of retirement and aged care campuses, as well as funds under management.

Bill has been appointed to the National Australia Bank nabhealth National Advisory Council, advising the National Australia Bank on contemporary dental trends and also sat on the Medical Advisory Committee for Bupa Australia.

Bill is the Independent Chairman of the Work Injury Research Foundation. In 2012, Bill was appointed as the independent Chairman of Riverwise Pty Ltd.

Bill has been appointed to the Board of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Australia as a Director. Motor neuron disease is a fatal condition that has no known cause or cure and claims the life of one Australian every day.

In 2010 he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Dental Corporation, the largest aggregator of dental practices in Australia, New Zealand and Canada and presently sits on the Bupa Dental Corporation Board.

In 2010 he was appointed as a Director of Employers Mutual Limited, a workers compensation company with a gross written premium pool circa of $A1 billion per annum under management. In 2011, Bill was appointed as Chairman of Employers Mutual Limited.

His clinical career has included private dental practice, service with the Royal Australian Navy and oversight of the optical, dental and physiotherapy clinics for Manchester Unity Australia.

Bill served two terms as the President of the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch, and two terms as the President of the National Australian Dental Association. In 2012 Bill was appointed as the President of the Dental Council of NSW. The same year, he held the office of interim CEO of ADA NSW Centre for Professional Development.

Bill was the Professional Officer for the Dental Council of New South Wales and assists the government of New South Wales Motor Accident Authority in relation to dental injuries
He was the President of the Commonwealth Dental Association 2012-2015 and has chaired two standing committees of the FDI in Geneva Switzerland.

He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally on jurisprudential matters, and has been actively involved in oversight of professional indemnity in New South Wales.

Bill has been closely involved in curriculum development on jurisprudential and personal and professional development for dental auxiliaries and dental undergraduates. He has held positions as a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney and is presently a conjoint Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle.

Bill has had significant input into matters affecting dental workforce mal-distribution for Australia and in particular New South Wales.

Professor Adeyami Olusile (Nigeria)

Professor Adeyami Olusile

Adeyemi Oluniyi Olusile, a Professor of Conservation Dentistry at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, is a 1979 graduate of the Dental School, University of Lagos, Nigeria. He was at the Eastman Institute of the University of London, where he obtained his M.Sc. in Conservation Dentistry in 1987. He has been a Lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University since 1989 and also a Consultant Restorative Dentist at the Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife. He trains dentists both at the undergraduate and Fellowship levels. He is External Examiner to a number of dental schools in Nigeria and Ghana.

Adeyemi was President of the Nigerian Dental Association 2006 to 2010, a member of many international dental associations, a fellow of the International College of Dentists and was until May 2015  the Vice- President (West Africa Region) of the Commonwealth Dental Association.

Professor D Y D Samarawickrama BDS (Cey), PhD (Lond), FDSRCS (Eng), FHEA (UK), FCGDP (SL)

Professor  D Y D Samarawickrama

Professor Samarawickrama is Emeritus Professor of Conservative Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. He was formerly Professor of Conservative Dentistry and Senior Tutor (Dentistry) at Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, QMUL. He was also an Honorary Consultant and a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics at Barts and the London NHS Trust, London.

He is an external examiner for the Overseas Registration Examination, General Dental Council, UK and an Academic Lead for the LDSRCS Examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is Consultant Advisor in dental Education and Visiting Professor in Restorative Dentistry at Oman Dental College, Sultanate of Oman and Visiting Professor in Restorative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dental Science, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

During his academic career, he has been an external examiner to several dental schools in the UK, the University of the West Indies, Kwame Nkrumah University, Ghana and the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has been a consultant in Dental Education to WHO/ PAHO and an advisor to the Barbados Dental Council. He is a former Director of the Dental Auxiliary School, London, a former President of the British Association of Teachers of Conservative Dentistry and a former President of The Barts and The London Alumni Association Dental Chapter.

His main research interests include Dental Metrology, Endodontics and Prosthodontics. He lectures on a wide range of topics both in the UK and overseas.

Professor Samarawickrama was elected the Executive Secretary of the CDA at the Triennial Meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2013, and re-elected in May 2015 in Manchester. Before that, he was the Editor of the CDA NEWS which position he was appointed to in 2006 having previously been the Co-Editor of the CDA Bulletin with Professor Martin Hobdell from 1996.

During a career spanning more than 45 years, he has won many medals and awards. He was awarded the title “DDU Dentist Teacher of the Year UK and Ireland” in 2008 and Geoffrey Slack Medal for outstanding service by the Institute of Dentistry QMUL in 2012. 

He is now semi-retired and devotes his time to educational activities, charitable work and travel.

Dr Geddes was appointed as the CDA Treasurer in April 2013 and re-elected in May 2015 in Manchester. .

Ricardo Crawford (Bahamas)

Dr. Ricardo Crawford is a native Bahamian born in Nassau, The Bahamas. 

He began his post-secondary education at the College of The Bahamas where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Biology in 1989.  He then went onto obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, USA, in 1991. Dr. Crawford was accepted to Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA and graduated in 1995 with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry Degree (DMD).  He received Honour awards in Paediatrics, Periodontics, Endodontics and Oral Surgery. He earned a fellow designation in the International Congress of Oral Iimplantologist (ICOI).

Dr. Crawford returned to The Bahamas in 1995 as an Associate Dentist at Star Dental Clinic and later went on and opened his own practice, Genesis Dental Center Bahamas Ltd., with a focus on general/family dentistry including restorative, implant and cosmetic dentistry.  Dr. Crawford also operates two satellite offices in Abaco and Long Island, Bahamas.

He is a past president and past vice president of the Bahamas Dental Association,  a member of the Bahamas Dental Council,  a member of the Bahamas Dental Association, the American Dental Association and a past member of the FDI and a member of the ICOI.
Presently, Dr. Crawford serves as the deputy chairman of the Bahamas Dental Council. He was elected to the CDA Executive in May 2015.

Dr Crawford developed and implemented the first Bahamas National Dental Board Exam. 

Following his belief in giving back to the community, Dr. Crawford has assisted in many community outreach projects to help those patients who otherwise could not afford dental care.

Dr. Crawford enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and boating. He is also an avid reader and enjoys cooking and gardening.

Dr Susan Maina BDS (Nbi), MSc (USA), AEGD and Aesthetic Dentistry (USA), OGW (Kenya)

Susan Maina

Dr Maina is a Senior Lecturer and former Chairman, Department of Conservative and Prosthetic Dentistry School of Dental Sciences, University of Nairobi.

She is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angles (USA) with Master of Science in Oral Biology and Certificates in Aesthetic Dentistry and Advanced Education in General Dentistry.

She is the Immediate Past Treasurer of the Kenya Dental Association (KDA) and former President, East and Southern Division of The International Association of Dental Research. She has been involved in FDI activities as NLO of KDA for many years. She is active in the promotion of oral health among school children and disadvantaged groups in Kenya, leading to a Presidential award-Order of Grant Worrier (OGW).

She was first elected to the CDA Executive in November 2012 and re-elected in May 2015.
Her research interest is herbal medicine and its application in dentistry. She is currently working on her PhD.

Russ Ladwa (UK)

Regional Vice President (Europe)

Born of Indian parents (1950) and schooled in Kenya.
Came to the UK aged 18.
Trained at The London Hospital Medical College, BDS (London 1975).
After working in hospitals and abroad, I have been In general practice in London since 1977.

Appointed one of the first General Practitioners as a Postgraduate Dental Tutor for London University in 1990, serving for 23 years.

In 1992, Founder member and Diplomat of the Faculty General Dental Practitioners (at the Royal College of Surgeons of England) Elected Board member,(1994) Vice Dean (2006-08) then Dean of FGDP(UK) from 2009 to 2012.

Appointed Advisor for Dentistry to Minister of Health, then Chairman of Dental Vocational Training Authority (2004-06).
President of the Odontology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, London (2012-13)

Currently an elected member of the BDA's Principal Executive Committee and in private practice in West London.
Main interest and lifelong contribution to improving patient care and raising standards through education, training assessment and research by the whole team.
Professional interest & contribution in leadership training and mentoring.

Now wish to share experience, knowledge and good fortune of a noble career with others in the Commonwealth wherever there is need and willing to consider any suitable proposals that would enable this. 

I have been married to Taru for 33 years and have two daughters, one a hospital doctor and the younger training to be a dentist!

Gilbert Aboryo Ankrah (Ghana)

Dr Ankrah graduated from Turner Dental School, University of Manchester in 1985. In 1986, he joined the Ghana Ministry of Health and was appointed Dental Surgeon and later Senior Dental Surgeon. In 1995, he started his residency training at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England in1998. He undertook additional training leading to MSc in Gerodontology at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London in1998. In the same year, he obtained the Licentiate in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was awarded Foundation Fellow of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2004.

In 2009, he was appointed Lecturer, and Head of Department of Adult Oral Health, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Dental School, Ghana. He is the Chairman of Continuing Professional Development Programs and Examiner in Restorative Dentistry of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is a Member and Rapporteur of the Harmonized Curriculum for Dental Surgery, West African Health Organization. He has served as a Consultant and Facilitator for several Conferences and Workshops in Restorative Dentistry and Gerodontics.

His main research interests include Root Caries and Toothwear.

Presently, he is the Chief Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, Specialist Health Ghana Dental Hospital.
He is the President of Ghana Dental Association and was key in organizing and facilitating a highly successful CDA/GDA Regional Workshop in Accra from 18 – 19 February 2014, themed “Oral Health Care for the Elderly”. He was elected to the CDA Executive in May 2015.

He is passionate about current affairs and national issues. He enjoys listening to radio programs.

Dr Suresh Shanmuganathan (Sri Lanka)

Suresh Shanmuganathan

Dr Suresh Shanmuganathan graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka (with Second Class Honours) in January, 1993.

He obtained his Master of Surgery (Oral Surgery) from Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in November, 1997 was Board Certified as a Specialist in Oral &R Maxillofacial Surgery in November, 1999.

He obtained the Fellowship of Dental Surgery (FDSRCS - England) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in December, 1999 and the Membership of Surgical Dentistry (MSurgDentRCS - Edinburgh) of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in March, 2001.

He had his Overseas postgraduate training at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK

He is a Fellow of the International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a Member of the American Dental Association.

He has attended numerous workshops / courses and delivered lectures at learned societies / colleges / associations.

He has served the Board of Study (Dental surgery) of Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo and is an examiner for Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo.

Presently works as Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Government and Private sector.

Dr Suresh has held many prominent positions in Local and International Organizations. He is presently the President of Sri Lanka Dental Association and Vice President of Sri Lanka Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. He had been the Past president of College of Dentistry & Stomatology of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Academy of Aesthetic & Cosmetic Dentistry.

He is also a council member of Sri Lanka Medical Council & Private Health Services Regulatory Council.

He became the Vice President of the Commonwealth Dental Association for the Southeast Asian region at the 7th Triennial Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa on 3rd November, 2012

Statement

In the role of board chairman or member, I encourage a diverse variety of opinions and contributions from board and executive members, but take a stand on important issues. I have a clear understanding of the governance/ management split, the process of strategic and business planning and the need for participatory teamwork.

Ulrike Matthesius

Ulrike Matthesius

Ms Ulrike Matthesius has worked in the Professional Services Directorate of the British Dental Association (BDA) for over 10 years and for much of this time has been responsible for International Affairs within the directorate.

Ms Matthesius is combining her CDA administrator role with her existing one as BDA Education Adviser.

Her work at the BDA includes looking after the Education, Ethics and International Affairs Committees and advising BDA members on issues in these areas as well as dealing with a variety of regulatory enquiries.
